Truth and Reconciliation – 94 Calls to Action

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC), led by Justice Murray Sinclair, Chief Wilton Littlechild,
and Dr. Marie Wilson, was established to document the history and impacts of the residential school system on
Indigenous peoples.

The Roman Catholic Church has since responded to the TRC’s Calls to Action, including the 2022 Papal Visit with
Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples. Sacred Heart now focuses on Call to Action 61:
community-led healing and reconciliation, cultural and language revitalization, education, and
relationship-building grounded in truth and respect.

Pope Francis at Sacred Heart

“Dear Indigenous brothers and sisters, I have come here as a pilgrim to say how precious you are to me and to the Church.
I want the Church to be intertwined among us, as tightly woven as the colored threads you wear. May the Lord help us move
forward in healing toward a renewed future… May Saints Joachim and Anne bless us on our journey.”

— Pope Francis (July 25th, 2022)

“We acknowledge that Treaty 6 territory on which we are standing is the ancestral traditional land of the Indigenous Peoples of First Nations, Métis and Inuit, and is the common home to each one of us in virtue of God, our Creator’s gracious gift to us.”
